The Hawaii food scene has never been better than it is now?Honolulu has always had amazing dives (my favorites are Pho 97 for Vietnamese; Yamagen for Japanese; Dew Drop Inn for northern Chinese; and Yama's for Hawaiian?I also recommend Sushi ii for some of the best sushi on the island), but they're now joined by some excellent new places, many of them opened by locals who have gone to the mainland to cook at restuarants such as Savoy, Per Se, and the French Laundry before coming home to open their own ventures. On this trip, I'm planning on visiting @fetehawaii, the highly anticipated @restaurantsenia, @mahinaandsuns, @kaimukisuperette, and @overeasyhi. Last week, I found a great new lunch spot in Mission Social Hall and Cafe (@missionbypili). Located on the grounds of the Hawaiian Mission Houses?three of the earliest missionary-built homes in Hawaii, and now a museum?it serves a couple of mainstay dishes (including kalua pig stew with breadfruit and rice) and two daily specials: here, a ginger-chicken ramen salad and a green curry with potatoes, chicken, and eggplant, along with a mango spritzer and a side dish of pickled root vegetables.
